THE NEOS PROJECT

A new modelling framework under development for the simulation of metamorphism and fluid-rock interaction processes

NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF FLUID FLOWS

In rock systems, neos will simulate aqueous fluid, melt production and flow that are controlled by the compaction pressure of the rock matrix and mineral reactions.

ADVANCED PETROLOGICAL MODELS

We are implementing advanced thermodynamic models in neos that include mineral metastability for partial re-equilibration  as well as aqueous thermodynamics

APPLICATION TO PALEO-SUBDUCTION ZONES

Firstly, neos will be applied to study metamorphism in high-pressure rocks and to reconstruct fluid pathways and fluxes in paleo-subduction systems. Our playgrounds are the Alps and the Cyclades (photo: Syros)

APPLICATION TO PALEO-CRUSTAL SECTIONS

Secondly, neos will be applied to study prograde metamorphism in continental crust to understand how thermal anomalies can affect the formation and distribution of aqueous fluids and melts. Our playgrounds are the Alps and the El Oro metamorphic province in southern Ecuador (photo: Ivrea Zone, Western Alps).
